Frans Van Der Mijn is believed to have been born in Amsterdam. He was the third son of the artist Herman Van Der Mijn (1684-1741). Frans established a fashionable portrait practice in Amsterdam from 1722 to 1749.He travelled and settled in London c.1750, where he met with success painting mainly portraits of the middle classes. It is said some clients were deterred by his instance on smoking a pipe whilst painting! Frans did exhibit his work, 40 paintings at the Free Society of Artists from 1761 to 1722. His English portraits are very close to the style of Highmore and his best have considerable individuality and character.
Frans died in London on 20 August 1783.
