He was born in The Hague on the 3 May 1916 and went on to become an artist, restorer and poet. His father was Pieter Nicolaas van Eyck who was a poet, critic, essayist and philosopher and his wife Nelly Estelle Benjamins, a woman of Sephardic origin was born and raised in Suriname, a country on the North Eastern Atlantic coast of South America. In March 1918, his brother Aldo van Eyck, was born in Driebergen and became a famous architect. In 1919 the family moved to London where his father was a correspondent for the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, an influential Rotterdam-based liberal daily newspaper published between 1844 and 1970. Van Eyck was educated in England at Sidcot School in Somerset.He married in London, on 3 December 1962 the divorcee, Princess Christina Margarethe of Hesse, they had two children Helen and Mark, but separated in 1985 and divorced on 3 February 1986. Robert was something of a ‘Renaissance man’ with many interests and a highly artistic talent. This most unusual Triptych set of three paintings which shows an understanding of work by Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and Trevelyan. It seems very likely he would have known all three artists as he was part of the London Art scene in the Post War years.Robert was an able restorer of old master paintings in London as well.
