James was a sporting painter and became known as Loder of Bath.He did not exhibit his paintings in London but was well known in his day as a local painter of horses and sporting groups in Bath and the surrounding area.He was a talented portrait painter of equestrian and animal subjects, including coach and carriage horses and race horses. His work is usually signed & dated and inscribed "Bath".At his best, Loder's work is of a very high quality. Some of his pictures were aquatinted by G. Hunt.
