Hill was a painter of landscape, rustic genre scenes and portraits. Born and studied in Birmingham and came to London 1839. He exhibited works at Suffolk Street, the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1868 and at the British Institute. He was elected RBA in 1842. Hill attracted the patronage of Baroness Burdett-Coutts for whom he painted a number of portraits, animal & dog studies. Hill frequently visited Ireland and painted a number of works there. Many of his works were reproduced lithographically for the "Illustrated London News".Hill died in Highgate in 1882.
