History painter and
occasional portraitist who was born in
Malines, France but
moved to England in 1677.
He was studio
assistant to Antonio Verrio but was working on his own by 1690.
He was much admired
for his mural and ceiling paintings, examples of which can be seen at Melbury
and Powis Castle.
He died and was buried
His portraits are rare,
but this work bears a number of matching features with the signed work, sold at
Sotheby’s in 1954.
illustrated in our current picture are extremely opulent and the style of
clothing although it has almost an Elizabethan quality about it, does seem to
date from the William and Mary period circa 1690-1700.
