Robert Cleminson was based in London. He became a sporting painter who specialized in Highland scenes and sporting scenes.
He became very well known for his subjects of deer, dead game, dogs, shooting etc. Many of his paintings were of setters seated by dead game in a highland landscape often painted in pairs.
He exhibited his work, 4 at Suffolk Street from 1865 to 1868 and 10 at the British Institution. He is recorded as living at 6 Hemmings Row in 1865 and this was the address he gave while exhibiting.
He often painted in a soft, diffuse style, which contributes to his work being much sought after today.
