John Morgan was a genre, historical and biblical painter. Most of his pictures include children.
He became a regular exhibitor at the major London exhibitions in particular the Royal Society of British Artists where he showed 114 paintings between 1853 and 1886.
He showed 13 at the Royal Academy from 1852 to 1886, 8 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, 9 at the Glasgow Institute, 7 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, 12 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 39 Royal Society of British Artists, 7 at the Royal institute of Oil Painters, 2 at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the British Institution.
He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1875. It is known that Morgan was living in Guildford Surrey in 1880 and Hastings in 1882.
It is interesting to note the prices of his painting, which were often over £100 ranging to £250, which was a considerable sum in the 1870’s and 80’s. This gives some measure of the high regard his work achieved.

His son, Frederick Morgan like his father became a painter of children, as well as domestic genre, animals and portraits.
Morgan’s studio sale was held at Christies 1 March 1887.

Works by him are in the Victoria & Albert Museum; the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool; and the Guildhall.
