Gustave Henri Colin was born in Arras in 1828. He studied art under Dutilleux and Couture and made his Salon debut in 1857 with a portrait of the artist’s grandmother. Colin became a painter of genre scenes and landscapes. He exhibited at the 1863 Salon des Refuses with Pelota Players. Subsequently he exhibited on a regular basis at the Paris Salon until the inauguration of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts; and from its beginning he was a member and exhibited his Basque and Spanish landscapes and genre compositions there.
In 1906 a comprehensive exhibition of his work was presented at the Societe Nationale.
Colin worked in a pronounced realist style producing canvases that are highly accomplished in terms of composition and use of colour.
