J.F. Herring Jnr was the eldest son of the celebrated sporting painter John Frederick Herring Snr. Naturally he studied under his father at first becoming a studio assistant to help his father keep up with the demand for his work.
When John Frederick Jnr embarks on his own career taking a studio in London, there was a family disagreement as J.F. Snr was losing a very able assistant and it was felt that J. F. Jnr was trading on his father’s name. However this quarrel did not last and J.F. Jnr made a very successful career of his own concentrating on painting sporting and farmyard scenes in both oils and watercolours.
His work has remained very popular and in his day he exhibited over 50 works in major London exhibits including the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and Suffolk Street.

He often collaborated with other painters providing very high quality animals to their work.

Herring Jnr married the artist Kate Rolfe and they lived in Cambridge.
