Gray was a painter of still-lifes and portraits in both oils and crayons. He was born in Newcastle where he was apprenticed to an ‘eminent fruit painter’ called Jones.
He sailed from Whitehaven on a ‘botanizing expedition’ in 1787 and on another to Poland. When he returned to Newcastle he opened a shop in Dean Street as a ‘portrait, fruit, house and sign painter’. He was a close friend of Thomas Bewick. Gray exhibited one work at the Royal Academy in 1811.

Works by the artist are in the Laing Art Gallery; Newcastle; Shipley Art Gallery & Gateshead.
