Otto Ottesen was born on 3 April 1816 in Broager (Jutland) Denmark. His middle name is sometimes spelt Diderich, Didrick or Didrik.
In 1834 he was a pupil of J.G. berg in Copenhagen and studied at the Kunstakademi from 1834 to 1843 and became a member in 1886 and a professor in 1874. Ottesen was working at a similar time to the other great Danish master of still life paintings, Johan Laurents Jensen (1800-1856). Both artists were pupils of the Copenhagen Academy.
He became a wonderful painter of still lifes as can be seen by this painting. His paintings are filled with beautiful observation and an exquisite attention to detail throughout.

Ottesen died in Copenhagen on 2 October 1892.

Works in Museums & Galleries: Museum of Copenhagen has 7 paintings representing flowers & fruits.
