SETTERS ON A HILLSIDE

COLIN GRAEME ROE
1855-1910
Signed
Oil on canvas 16 x 22 inches
Framed size 21 ¼ x 27 inches

Colin was the son of the artist Robert Henry Roe and grandson of Edward Hodges Bailey RA (sculptor of Nelson’s monument in Trafalgar Square).
Roe was educated in London and entered his father’s studio at the age of 17. Colin went on to specialize in animal subjects, often featuring retrievers, setters and terriers with game; as well as highland views with stags.
This painting is very typical of his favoured subject, but the quality of this particular piece is truly outstanding.
He is recorded being in Argyll in 1857 and Sheffield in 1910.
He signed his work Colin Graeme or Colin Graeme Roe.
