Franz Schutz was born in Frankfurt, a member of one of the great 18th Century dynasties of painters and son of Christian Georg Schutz I who created highly romantic Italianate and Rhineland views. It is difficult to distinguish between some of the members of this family as they worked together a great deal but these works have a far more Italianate flavour which fits with the brief career of Franz for he travelled to Italy to study after receiving initial tuition from his father. It is said that his visit to Switzerland and Italy had a beneficial effect on his work. Sadly, his career was all too brief as he died at the age of 30.

These paintings typify the 18th century elegance that is so perennially popular.

Works in Museums: Berne, Graz, Frankfurt
