Literature G67506 FAMILY GATHERING - PREPARING THE MEAL ADOLF ALEXANDRE DILLENS 1821 – 1877 Signed & dated 1856 Oil on canvas 33 ½ x 42 ½ inches Framed size 47 ½ x 56 ¾ inches Adolf Dillens was a Belgian painter who specialized in genre scenes. He was also a great draughtsman and engraver. He was a pupil of his brother, Hendrick Joseph Dillens and was a close friend of the writer Charles Decoster. Two of his paintings “The Bridge of Love” and “Zealand Barber” had figured in the Belgian Art Exhibition in Brussels in 1905. Zetland, Denmark was where he had often painted, also where he was admired most of all during his lifetime. In the majority of his genre scenes, there were hidden anecdotes which were there for the people to find, which was a key feature, to why his work was widely admired.
