Adolf Dillens was a Belgian painter who specialized in genre scenes. He was also a great draughtsman and engraver.
He was a pupil of his brother, Hendrick Joseph Dillens and was a close friend of the writer Charles Decoster.
Two of his paintings “The Bridge of Love” and “Zealand Barber” had figured in the Belgian Art Exhibition in Brussels in 1905.
Zetland, Denmark was where he had often painted, also where he was admired most of all during his lifetime.
In the majority of his genre scenes, there were hidden anecdotes which were there for the people to find, which was a key feature, to why his work was widely admired.
He lived in Ghent and died in Brussels.
