Reportedly born in London, son of Christopher Seton a gem engraver.
He went on to study under Francis Hayman and at St. Martin’s Lane Academy. He exhibited 15 paintings at the Society of Artists and 3 works at the Royal Academy from 1761 to 1774. In 1769 was elected Fellow of the Society of Artists.
Seton travelled to Rome from 1758 to 1759. Worked in Bath from 1766, Edinburgh from 1772, India in 1774 then back in Edinburgh until 1776, when he moved to Calcutta until 1785. He returned to Edinburgh in 1785, when Ozias Humphry recorded that he had ‘just returned to England after an easy time in Bengal and with twelve thousand pounds in his pocket’. Seton was still working in Edinburgh up to his death in 1806.
Seton specialized in small full-length conversation pieces in the manner of Zoffany. His portrayal of sitters can be remarkably sensitive. Today his portraits of the great historical figures in the history of India and the Raj are by far his most important.
