Giovanni Bellucci was born in Venice and went on to become a portrait painter. In 1716 he accompanied Antonio Bellucci to England but it is unknown if this was his father or uncle. They stayed together and Giovanni was an assistant for 6 years until Antonio left England in 1722.
Walpole says he did good business in Ireland, but this was a mistake, as it was Scotland where, among others, he was painting portraits for the Earl of Haddington from 1722 to 1724 and for the Earl of Leven in 1739.
This early work would be soon after his arrival in England and would have been for the Marchmont/Polwarth families.
There is a Venetian air about Bellucci’s portraits and he has a soft and silky manner which is easily recognisable in this portrait.
Another version of this painting can be seen in Ellis Waterhouse’s Dictionary of British 18th Century Painters on page 49.
