Edward Williams was born in the Lambeth district of London, the son of Edward Williams the engraver.
He married Ann Hildebrandt and was the father of the famous Williams family of artists; his sons were Alfred Walter Williams, Arthur Gilbert, Edward Charles Williams, George Augustus Williams, Sidney Richard Percy and Henry John Boddington.
He studied under James Ward and exhibited works at the Royal Academy from 1814 to 1855, at the British Institute and Suffolk Street; Society of British Artists.
Edward particularly favoured views along the Thames, heath subjects and moonlight scenes for which he is best known. In his lifetime these were so much associated with him that he was often referred to as ‘Moonlight Williams’ or the Moonlight painter. His paintings have strong colours, twisted trees and wide stormy skies of Ruisdael, the quiet water mills of Hobbema, but there was also a deliberate attempt at a more green and modern approach. His palette gained in subtlety as his career advanced with the use of dark, slatey greys and blues point to later work. He very rarely signed his work, even the finest examples.

Edward lived for sixty years in the area of Tottenham Court Road artist’s quarter, at 11 Greys Inn Terrace for nearly a decade, followed by a long period at 100 Cromer Street.
He was a kind man devoted to his ‘dear boys’ as he called them, but he never recovered from the death of his wife in 1851.
He died at the age of 73, on 24 June 1855 and is buried at Old Barnes Cemetery.
