Gordon was active exhibiting between 1871 and 1894, showing works such as Pet Parrot and Lady Teazle at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Society of British Artists in London, as well as at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery.
In 1876 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, and was a painter of portrait and genre scenes.
He is recorded living in London at 343 Hackney Road; 5 Grafton Street, Fitzroy Square in 1873; 41 Grafton Street in 1886 and 171 Stanhope Street in 1889.

There is a painting by Robert James Gordon in the New South Wales Art Gallery, Australia.
