A BLACK HORSE IN A LANDSCAPE WITH DOGS

H.C. SMITH

Worked from 1820-1840 Signed, inscribed & dated 1838
Oil on canvas 26 x 33 ¼ inches
Framed size 33 ¼ x 40 ¾ inches

H.C. Smith was chiefly a sporting painter and portraits of dogs as well as still life’s and landscapes. He went on the exhibit his work at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Suffolk Street.
In 1821 he exhibited 3 paintings at the R.A and was living at 4, Warwick Street, Charing Cross.
In 1822, 1823 and 1831 he exhibited one painting for each of those years and is recorded living at 11 Westminster Bridge Road, London. Very little else is know about this talented painter, but in common with many painters of this subject, it is likely that he travelled to Country Estates to work on commissions.
This charming painting is one of his rarer examples with the owner’s favourite horse included.
A splendid piece of English Country House painting.
