James Webb was born at Chelsea, London. He became a painter of English and continental coastal views with a preference for dramatic scenery such as St Michaels Mount, Ischia, Bamburgh Castle and San Sebastian. He was influenced by Constable and Turner and his paintings of rocky coast scenes are strong with clearly defined outlines along with freshness and vigour. His paintings were also robust, and of a naturalistic style using a pale range of colours.
It is however his views of the British and Dutch coasts and estuaries where Webb really excels.
He exhibited 29 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1853-1888,
37 at the British Institute from 1852-1867, 38 Suffolk Street, 6 at the New Watercolour Society and 1 at the Grosvenor Gallery. Webb also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the New Watercolour Society and it is known that 18 paintings were exhibited at various other exhibitions.
Webb died in London in 1895.
