History painter and occasional portraitist who was born in
Malines, France but moved to England in 1677.
He was studio assistant to Antonio Verrio but was working on his own by 1690.
He was much admired for his mural and ceiling paintings, examples of which can be seen at Melbury and Powis Castle.

He died and was buried in London.

His portraits are rare but this work bears a number of matching features with the signed work, sold at Sotheby’s in 1954.

The fabrics illustrated in our current picture are extremely opulent and the style of clothing although it has almost an Elizabethan quality about it, does seem to date from the William and Mary period circa 1690-1700.
